Truckee is quickly becoming a top destination for trail running with a wide variety of trails that feature everything from flowy single track, mountain meadows, wildflowers, old growth forests and ridge line traverses.  There’s something for everyone.  If you don’t live here, a great way to explore the trails is by signing up for a group trail run or an organized race so that you stay safe and have support while exploring the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

Donner Party Mountain Runners Annual Picnic

Kick off your running season with this fun run and meet other local runners.  There will be group runs with varying distances, a kids race and a picnic sponsored by Tahoe Mountain Sports.  There will be Salomon and The North Face shoes to demo and a huge raffle with amazing prizes.  This group is also a great resource for trail information and weekly group runs.  For more information check out Donner Party Mountain Runners.

Truckee Running Festival

This fun event is held at the Riverview Sports Park in Truckee and has race distances for the entire family.  The Truckee Running Festival is a fundraiser for the Girls On The Run and features a 5K run on the Legacy Trail along the Truckee River. Other distances include the Legacy 10K which is a paved trail run that heads east out and back on the Legacy Trail and the Waddle Ranch Half Marathon that heads out of the Riverview Sports Park and into Waddle Ranch Preserve on dirt roads and single track with stellar views of Martis Valley.  There are also fun runs on the fields for little kids so everyone can participate.  Check out Ultrasignup for details and registration.

Squaw Mountain Run

Every year hundreds of runners and hikers make the annual pilgrimage to the top of Squaw Valley to enjoy an awesome workout and take in the stunning views of Lake Tahoe and the High Sierra.  The Squaw Mountain Run trail starts at the base of Squaw and climbs 2000 feet to High Camp in 3.6 miles. There you are rewarded with music, refreshments, beer (if over 21), a raffle and awards.  There are also options to take the cable car up to High Camp and do a guided wild flower walk.  This event is produced by Auburn Ski Club, sponsored by Salomon and a benefit for Tahoe Forest Hospital Foundation.  For more details check out the Tahoe Mountain Sports blog.

Sierra Crest Ultra Run

The Sierra Crest Ultra Run 30k and 50k is an exciting point-to-point trail run that takes advantage of some of Truckee and Donner Summit’s best single track trails.  The courses offer scenic views of some of the Northern Sierra’s most stunning terrain as you cross the Sierra Crest including the Euer Valley, Frog Lake Cliffs, Summit Lake, and Castle Peak. Plan for some uphill and downhill on this fun course with 4,660 ft gain and 4,125 ft loss for the 50k and 3,493 ft gain and 2,948 ft loss for the 30k.  With epic snowfall this past winter the trail running conditions are going to be phenomenal! Castle Peak 100

Experience dramatic scenery, demanding trails and genuine support on this point-to-point mountain course.  The Castle Peak 100 trail race starts near historic Donner Camp in Truckee then runners will will climb and descend some 14,000 feet at an average elevation of 7,100 feet.  The course tours the Tahoe National Forest, Tahoe Donner, Donner Lake Rim Trail, Basin and Castle Peaks, Royal Gorge and Sugar Bowl before descending Cold Stream Canyon to finish at Donner Memorial State Park.  This event is produced by the Donner Party Mountain Runners and more information is at castlepeak100k.com.

Great Trail Race

The Great Trail Race is a fundraiser for Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue with runners and mountain bikers racing between Truckee and Tahoe City and embodies the spirit of the Great Ski Race in the winter.  Check out greattrailrace.com for more details.
