A Need and a Vision
Seven years ago, the Tahoe Silicon Mountain founding members saw a need. In Silicon Valley, professional networking opportunities are ubiquitous. Many people move from Silicon Valley to Truckee to work remotely, and many more regularly visit or own homes in Truckee. But, there wasn’t a place for people to gather to discuss technology or the opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs in Truckee, and many local tech entrepreneurs ended up moving back to the Bay Area.
Who Is Tahoe Silicon Mountain (TSM)?
An organization that facilitates events where people can meet in-person to talk shop, meet interesting people who’re involved in technology businesses, learn how others run their technology companies in the mountains, share job opportunities, exchange ideas for improving their businesses, grow the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, and much more.
Initially created by Johannes Ziegler and brought to life by Ziegler, Garrett McCullough and Rachel Arst McCullough, it’s where people can meet their co-founder, and listen to interesting presentations about the intersection of technology, community, environment, education and entrepreneurship. At TSM, you can meet other current and aspiring entrepreneurs and support our growing community. And you can be assured that there will be a lively discussion!
Early meetings of TSM often only saw 10-15 attendees. Over time, the word spread about the quality of the events and attendance has grown dramatically. It’s not unusual to find more than 60 attending the Monday night events at Pizza on the Hill.
A wide range of topics have been covered and some favorites include: “Beyond Books: How Libraries of the Digital Age Can Foster Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” “The Sharing Economy: Uber, Airbnb and How Sharing Resources Spreads the Wealth” and “How You Can Be a Change Agent: Learn from the Creators of Truckee’s New Makerspace.”
With the help of Pizza on the Hill and the generous support of long time sponsors, New Leaders, Clear Capital, and Holland & Hart, TSM is able to offer a delicious and easy-on-the wallet pizza and salad dinner for $5.
TSM recently started a new program, First Friday at Five, specifically for entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs to help each other grow their businesses.
And while more programs are on the horizon, the TSM leaders have an even bigger vision: to grow the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Truckee-Tahoe.
Just back from the Mountain Ventures Summit un-conference in Telluride, TSM co-founder, Rachel Arst McCullough will be sharing takeaways on creating and building healthy and sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystems in mountain towns. Anyone interested in learning more about the topic, or creating, growing, or supporting the growth of Truckee/Tahoe-based businesses is welcome to attend on April 10th (details below).
