Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee offers on-the-ground summer courses plus more than sixty classes that begin the week of Aug. 21. It is not too late to enroll in the one-month long summer session that takes place from June 26 through July 27, 2017. All of the on-campus summer classes listed below represent UC and CSU transferable units.
Ceramics I and II
Designed for students interested in working with clay, these courses include making functional as well as sculptural pieces. Under the expertise of art instructor Melanie Frakes, students practice clay handling and kiln safety while creating original ceramic work using traditional building techniques. Experienced students will learn advanced and non-traditional glazing techniques. Ceramics I and II are taught concurrently from 1 to 5:25 p.m. Monday – Thursday.
Intro. to Philosophy
Taught by Kris Hansen, this class meets from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and explores morality and values through ethics. Students will analyze ethical theories from philosophical texts and use critical thinking skills in formal written assignments.
In this course taught by Kim Bateman, Ph.D., students will learn about and critique major perspectives of psychology, evaluate scientific evidence for psychological claims and identify how psychology addresses issues related to human behavior. The focus is on the exploration of major psychological theories and concepts, methods, and research findings. This class meets from 8:30 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.
Students learn to logically summarize, explain and analyze information through a variety of writing assignments in this course that emphasizes the development and composition of clear and effective writing. Students will evaluate research material from multiple sources and discuss purpose, style, rhetorical and logical structure in this English course taught by Kris Hansen.
