Destination Marketing

The Chamber serves as the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for Truckee, marketing our natural assets, world-class recreation, lodging opportunities and tourism-related businesses. Our programs are funded through two sources:

Truckee Tourism Business Improvement District (TTBID)

The Truckee Tourism Business Improvement District (TTBID) is a proactive effort to provide supplemental marketing and promotional funding for Truckee, beyond current marketing funds. This supplemental funding enables the assessed lodging businesses to collectively increase the level of marketing to grow room nights and occupancy.

In order to remain and grow as a strong destination in the highly competitive tourism market, it is imperative that adequate resources are dedicated to tourism promotional efforts. The TTBID provides a stable source of funding, dedicated solely to tourism promotion efforts. 

The TTBID was passed by a Resolution of the Truckee Town Council September 22, 2015. The 2% assessment went into effect October 1, 2015.

Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT)

Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT), also known as a bed tax, is a lodging tax paid by short-term renters/lodgers, collected by property owners (hotels, vacation rentals, etc.) and remitted to the Town of Truckee. The current TOT rate is 10% of taxable rents on all short-term rentals in the Town of Truckee. TOT goes into the General Fund and is used for general business of the Town including road maintenance, snow removal, trail operation & maintenance, police services and other Town business.

Tourism Economic Impact

Tourism was instrumental to Nevada County’s financial success in 2017, with visitor spending reaching $343.7 million (up five percent from 2016), according to the Dean Runyan Associates report released last month by Visit California. The Nevada County tourism industry supported 3,670 jobs (six percent increase from 2016) and generated $12.5 million in local tax revenue last year (up 11 percent as compared to 2016). Visitor Study

The Truckee Chamber of Commerce worked with a strategic marketing group to conduct market research about tourism and visitor behavior in Truckee.  On Wednesday, February 11, 2015 Carl Ribaudo of Strategic Marketing Group (SMG) gave a presentation on the results of a year-long Visitor Profile Survey. The report contains information such as:

• How much visitors spend while here
• Geographic origin
• Various demographics:
• Age
• Level of education
• Household income
• Respondents’ experience here compared to their expectations
• If it was their first trip or a return visit
• If they plan to visit Truckee again and if so in what season
• What attributes they considered important when deciding to visit

California Welcome Center

The Truckee California Welcome Center has one of the highest visitations of all the 19 California Welcome Centers in the state receiving over 160,000 visitors a year.
