Truckee River Pipeline Rehabilitation Project + Bike Trail Closure
August 23, 2024
The Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency (T-TSA) needs to repair a small section of the 19.5 mile long sewer pipeline located under and adjacent to the Truckee River, River Road/California Hwy 89, and the Truckee River Bike Trail.
The sewer pipeline is showing signs of deterioration and potential failure, which would have significant consequences on the ecologically sensitive Truckee River and the riverbanks and to the adjacent communities of Tahoe City, Alpine Meadows, Olympic Valley, and Truckee.
To address this critical aging pipeline and protect the pristine Truckee River and adjoining habitats and communities, T-TSA is proactively rehabilitating the pipeline in 2025. The project team is evaluating rehabilitation methods, project design, and timing of implementation for minimal disruption to the ecology and communities of the impacted area.
What does this mean for you?
♦ The project will impact approximately 1.5 miles of the Truckee River Bike Trail starting around River Ranch Lodge/Alpine Meadows Road and ending near Olympic Valley Park and Road.
♦ Local communities, the Truckee River, and the Truckee River Bike Trail will be protected from future sewer deterioration and potential failure.
♦ The project team is working toward employing methodologies that require minimal excavation to expedite construction and minimize disturbance to the Truckee River, adjacent sensitive habitats, and bike trail usage.
♦ The project team is working to schedule the pipeline rehabilitation during September – October 2025 for minimal disruption to the surrounding communities.
♦ A section of the Truckee River Bike Trail may be closed for short periods during the approximately 4-6 week project.
♦ T-TSA and the project team will work with the surrounding community, including business owners and residents, to review the project approach and schedule to address community needs and interests.
♦ An overview of the project is included in the following graphic.
