A strong winter storm with extreme impacts is forecasted for the Tahoe-Truckee region this Thursday, 3/29 through Monday 3/4. In anticipation of this event, Tahoe-Truckee COAD is sharing some preparedness information. Please see the storm timeline above (expected to come in a little earlier Thursday now) and review these flyers about how to stay safe during severe storms.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a powerful storm system that is expected to impact all areas of Nevada County from Thursday 02/29 to Sunday 03/03. An initial wave of moderate to heavy rain with extremely heavy snow in the high country and strong, gusty winds area wide is forecast to begin Thursday.
Low and middle elevation snow impacts Saturday into Sunday is forecast. Low snow conditions could potentially impact areas as low as 1500’ elevation. Up to 9-11 feet of snow total is being projected from Thursday into early Sunday above 5000’. These conditions have resulted in a Blizzard Warning being issued from Thursday 10:00 am to Sunday 10:00 am with potentially life-threatening driving conditions. Mountain travel will be extremely dangerous or impossible during this time frame and travelers can expect difficult if not impossible conditions across Donner Summit on I-80.
Periods of heavy mountain snow are anticipated to possibly last into early next week.
The storm is expected to significantly impact services and infrastructure such as roads and utilities. However, the Town of Truckee Office of Emergency Services and Nevada County Office of Emergency Services are working with the Cities to prepare the community. The Office of Emergency Services encourages you to take proactive measures in preparation for this weather event. Check your propane and firewood levels, ensure your vehicles are topped off with fuel, make sure you have plenty of fuel for your generator, and be prepared in case of extended power or communications outages. A battery powered radio is a good item to have on hand in case of outages.

– To report downed power lines, first call 911 and then call your electrical provider, Truckee Donner Public Utility District (530) 587-3896) or Liberty Utilities (844) 245-6868). Remember, never touch or walk in the immediate area of a downed powerline; assume it is energized and extremely dangerous.
