Special Districts

Understanding Special Districts
Special districts are independent public agencies created to provide specific services within a defined geographic area. Unlike cities or counties, which deliver a broad range of services, special districts focus on one core function—such as water, fire protection, sanitation, healthcare, transportation, or recreation.
In Truckee, special districts play an essential role in delivering the everyday services that keep the community functioning, resilient, and livable.
Why Special Districts Matter in Truckee
Truckee’s mountain environment, seasonal population swings, and regional geography make service delivery complex. Special districts allow services to be locally governed, highly specialized, and tailored to community needs—often across town or county boundaries.
Together with the Town of Truckee and Nevada County, special districts form the backbone of how public services are planned, funded, and delivered.
Understanding special districts helps explain who does what in the community—and why multiple agencies are often involved in a single issue like housing, wildfire preparedness, or infrastructure investment.
