The Town of Truckee is the local municipal government serving the Truckee community. Incorporated in 1993, the Town is responsible for providing essential public services, maintaining community infrastructure, and guiding long-term planning to support a safe, resilient, and vibrant mountain town.

Animal Services

The Town of Truckee Animal Services and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe have a unique, long-standing partnership. Our shared animal shelter facility, located at 10961 Stevens Lane in Truckee, maximizes efficiency and effectiveness by housing public and private entities under the same roof. Working together, we are saving 100% of our community's adoptable pets.

Economic Development

Truckee's outstanding mountain environment, plentiful recreation opportunities, and strategic location along key transportation routes have contributed to the town's desirability as a place to live, work, and visit.

The Town's economic vitality strategies, guided by the 2040 General Plan Economic Development Element (PDF), focus on creating a diverse, resilient, and sustainable economy while maintaining Truckee's character, high quality of life, and superior community service.

Truckee functions as an important employment and business hub for the North Tahoe area as well as serving as one of the key tourist destinations within the region. Historically, Truckee's economy has been predominately made up of the tourism and industrial sectors. While tourism will always be an important part of our area's economy, Truckee is committed to maintaining a balanced mix of economic sectors, improving the diversity and resilience of the local economy, creating opportunities for jobs at income levels that make it financially feasible for employees to live and work in Truckee, and supporting businesses and commercial activities that build upon and enhance Truckee's unique character and natural environment.

Engineering

The mission of the Engineering Division is to create the best future for our community by providing engineering services necessary to solve Town infrastructure issues and minimize future impacts from land development.

Their goal is to provide professional engineering support to assist in improving the quality of life and public safety through the recommendations of development standards for road, drainage, traffic and frontage improvements, while providing best value plans and specifications for Town projects. The Engineering Division works for the citizens of Truckee. They endeavor to provide impartial evaluation of engineering matters as a basis for community decisions.

This Division is responsible for development review, encroachment issues, and management and turnkey execution of capital projects within the Town. The Engineering Division also provides inspection services with regards to encroachments on all commercial and residential projects.

Finance

The Finance Division is part of Administrative Services. It is responsible for protecting the Town's fiscal health and sustainability by maintaining compliance with financial policies and internal controls, accurate accounting of financial transactions, timely revenue collection and accounts receivable processing, timely payment of accounts payable, payroll and debt service, transparent and professional financial reporting, effective budget management, grant administration, cash and investment management, debt financing and administration, and ensuring efficient purchasing practices.

The department provides professional support to the Truckee Town Council, Town Manager and operating departments to assist them in making sound financial and organizational decisions that promote the fiscal sustainability of the Town and its ability to provide services to the community.

Housing

The goal of the Town of Truckee Housing Program is to strengthen our community, economy, and environment by increasing the inventory of homes our local workers can afford to rent and buy.The Town has a number of existing programs and policies in place that aim to facilitate both low-income and moderate-income home production and preservation. Revenue to support these programs comes from the Town General Fund, Measure K, and grants.

Planning Department

The Town of Truckee Planning Division is responsible for advance planning, development review, public information, and Development Code compliance. The activity is part of the Community Development Department and is managed by the Community Development Director and Town Planner. The Planning Division provides staff support to the Town Council (elected representatives) and the Planning Commission (appointed citizen planners). The Town Council provides overall policy direction, adopts ordinances and regulations, and acts as the hearing body for appeals of Planning Commission and staff decisions. The Planning Commission provides policy recommendations to the Town Council and functions as a hearing body for larger development projects within the Town.

Regular Public Meetings

Police Department

The Truckee Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency serving the Town of Truckee and its residents, visitors, and businesses. Established to support public safety in a dynamic mountain community, the department provides a full range of policing services tailored to local needs — from traditional patrol and investigations to traffic enforcement and community-focused programs.The department is organized into key operational divisions that work together to protect life and property, maintain public order, and strengthen community trust through transparent and professional service. These divisions include Patrol, Investigations, Traffic, Marine Operations, Reserves, and Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS). Officers and staff engage regularly with the community to address public safety concerns and build partnerships that enhance quality of life across Truckee.In addition to enforcement, the department offers support functions including records management, property and evidence services, animal services, and public information resources, ensuring accessible services and information for residents and visitors alike.

Public Transportation 

The Truckee Transportation Program encompasses the coordination and administration of Truckee public transit, as well as short- and long-term transit planning, multi-modal transportation integration, transportation user safety, and oversight of the Downtown Parking District. 

Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit (TART)

Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit (TART) services are operated in Truckee, along with regional services operated by Placer County. The Town currently contracts with Paratransit Services, Inc. to provide fixed route and Dial-a-Ride transit services, which includes day-to-day management of transit operations and dispatch for the Truckee TART system. The Truckee TART System includes the Truckee Local Route, general public Dial-A-Ride services, as well as complementary Americans with Disabilities Act paratransit services. Regional TART buses operated by Placer County connect Truckee to North Lake Tahoe along Highway 89 and Highway 267, and a seasonal Night Service between Truckee and Northstar is operated seasonally by the Town.

The two newest initiatives that have been introduced in Truckee include the TART Connect on-demand microtransit pilot program, which has been extended to June 2025, and the BCycle E-Bike Share Program, which launched a town-wide pedal assist electric bike share program in the summer of 2023 and returned for a second season in May 2024.

Public Works 

The Public Works Department provides year-round, all-weather service to public roadways and trail networks throughout our community. Public Works is dedicated to keeping our Town streets and trails clean and safe.

Responsibilities
The Road Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining approximately 165 miles of roadway.  Road maintenance activities vary by season. Crews perform snow removal during winter months, while summer months see street sweeping, painting of roadway markings, pothole patching, drainage infrastructure maintenance, and street sign repairs. 

The Facilities Maintenance Division oversees maintenance and landscaping of Town-owned or operated properties, and maintains 12 miles of paved trails. 

The Fleet Maintenance Division has a dedicated crew of maintenance and repair staff to ensure that the Town's fleet of 150 vehicles and equipment is operational.

Short-Term Rentals

Short-Term Rentals (STRs) are residential units rented 30 nights or less, typically advertised as vacation rentals. The Town began the expedited process of creating an STR Program in early August 2020 in response to heightened community interest and concern. The Short-Term Rental Ordinance (PDF) is intended to strike a balance between welcoming visitors to Truckee while reducing neighborhood nuisance issues associated with STR Properties. The ordinance includes a cap on the number of STR’s, regulations on noise, trash, parking, and fire safety standards. Operation or advertising an STR without a STR Transient Occupancy Registration Certificate will be subject to penalties as defined in Section 5.02.060 of the ordinance.
