Meet New Member: The Speedy Foundation
February 20, 2024
The Speedy Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to preventing suicide, supporting mental health education, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness. Their motto is “If you can talk about suicide, you can talk about anything.“
The Speedy Foundation draws its name from legendary 3-time Olympian, Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, hailing from Boise, ID, and Park City, UT. Speedy’s memory lives on through the foundation’s mission to prevent suicide, promote mental health education, and spark crucial conversations to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness.
At the heart of their mission are three pillars: Advocate, Educate, and Conversate. The foundation believes that suicide can be prevented through active advocacy for individuals struggling with mental health, conversations that challenge the stigma, and comprehensive mental health education.Through their Mentally Covered campaign, they aim to help make a suicide prevention champions out of everyone. On their website, mentallycovered.org, you’ll see active tools – literature and videos that you can access on different topics to help anyone feel comfortable talking about suicide and resources to help. There is also an online store on their website, with colorful beanies and logo-wear that you can purchase and the proceeds going directly to their advocacy, education, and public awareness outreach.
The Speedy Foundation collaborates and uses every means possible to start the conversation about suicide to help lose the stigma associated with talking about suicide and hopefully prevent tragedies. They support the efforts of the Tahoe Truckee Suicide Prevention Coalition, Know Overdose Nevada County, the Hope Squad and other nonprofits.
